Restoration of the Seaholm Power Plant

by : Eric Bramlett

Built in 1950, the Seaholm Power Plant stopped generating power and was shut down in 1989. Up until now, it's structure has stood only as a historical landmark along the scenic shore of Town Lake. Measuring 110 by 235 feet, this 136,000 square foot structure, with walls measuring three feet thick, has withstood the test of time. Although its power generating days are over, the plant was recently identified as a significant contender for a restoration, and in 2005 The Seaholm Redevelopment Team was designated to handle the project.

Project Overview

Occupying 7.8 acres, the Seaholm Power Plant will be transformed into a mix of office space, local retail shops, condos, hotel, special event space and a large outdoor terrace overlooking Town Lake. The redevelopment is projected to create more than 200 jobs and produce $2 million a year in tax revenue.

It is conveniently located only minutes from downtown shopping, restaurants, entertainment, jobs, hiking trails, transportation options, the major highways, I-35 & MoPack Expressway and a future commuter rail line to neighboring communities.

Seaholm Plaza Hotel

Scheduled to open in 2010, the upscale Seaholm Plaza Hotel will be located along the north shore of Town Lake, only minutes away from the Second Street Retail District. The hotel's architecture will reflect the Art Deco period combined with a modern, sophisticated boutique style. It will occupy 6 floors of a 22 story residential tower, and will include meeting space and a 2,500 square foot outdoor plaza just off the hotel.
