Credit Card Problems? Try Using Your Debit Card Instead!

by : Rachel Yoshida

People have been using checking accounts to help keep better track of their money for years and years. Today they are more valuable than ever. Using checks that are made out for the exact amount of a purchase can help to know exactly where your money has gone. It makes it much easier to pay bills because they can be put in the mail instead of having to purchase money orders or make a trip to get it done.

Checking accounts took on a whole new meaning when the debit card was invented. They are accepted now almost anywhere you can use a credit card. They work the same way a check does only the person you are paying with a debit card no longer has to worry about a check clearing the bank. They know as soon as the card is scanned whether it is accepted or declined. This can also keep you from making the bad decision to write a bad check that you do not have the money in the bank to cover.

One of the most beneficial uses for debit cards is the ability to purchase things over the internet. In the past you either had to have a credit card, have something delivered cash on delivery, or send a payment first. Now debit card holders can order anything they can pay for using a debit card. Some banks do not even charge a fee for a debit card. When you have a debit card, you no longer have to worry about your check being accepted when you are dealing with businesses or when you are out of town. They are great for purchasing airline tickets or reserving a hotel room on line.

Overall there really are no disadvantages of having a debit card. They do not accumulate high interest because they only use the cash that you have and is not from a line of credit. Even if your card is stolen, it cannot be accessed without a pin number. You can report loss or theft just as you would with a credit card.

If you are one of the few people left who do not yet have a debit card, what are you waiting for? When you learn to use a debit card instead of a credit card, you find that you are actually able to save money in the long run. If you do not have a credit card anyway, using a debit card will allow you some of the same advantages as long as you have the money in the bank to cover the charges.
