Skate Park Bandung
by: Emma Kwee

In recent years, extreme sport has become more and more popular among the Indonesian youths. Unfortunately, since traffic is chaotic and law enforcement is anything but liberal, outdoor places to pursue these sports are rare. In Bandung , a local group of skaters have opened up a skate park in the Western part of the city. The park, with the name of Buqiet Skate Park , isn't exactly easy to reach and requires a 30 minute climb over small side roads.

If you fancy matching your skills with the Indonesians or just hanging out with the local “in” crowd, Buqiet skate park is the place to be. The hall has a spacious street and vert section with a couple of quarterpipes and rails. Unfortunately, due to space limits, Buqiet doesn't have a halfpipe . Since the park has been built with a very low budget, it's amazing to see what they have accomplished. At the front, there is a small shop selling drinks and snacks where skaters and wannabe Tony Hawks hang out.

The park is open to skateboarders, inline skaters and BMXers. Usually, skaters and BMXers have their own schedule to avoid collisions while dare devi lling about. Skateboard lessons are also available everyday from 07.00 until 14.00 at Rp. 50,000 for two hours. There are irregular gigs at the venue sometimes so just check in to see if there's anything coming up.

Buqiet also has national competitions sponsored by brands like Rip Curl, Rusty or Billabong. It provides a good opportunity to see the national talents in action. Admittance to the park is Rp. 7500 and the park is opened daily from 07.00 to 23.00.
