Itb University
by: Emma Kwee

Bandung is known as a student city and one of the most renowned educational centers in Indonesia. Its 7 Universities attract thousands of students from all over the archipelago. It its easily detectable when you find yourself in the neighbourhood of a university. First of all the large number of young anak anak (‘kids') hanging out on the streets, then the abundance of laundromats and copy shops are also a hint, and thirdly the many cheap eating places that cater to small budgets with a big appetite usually indicate the proximity of a university.

The most renowned university is the Bandung Institute of Technology, established in 1920 by the Dutch. It was the first Dutch founded university that was open to Indonesians, as part of the Dutch desire to ‘educate' the next generation of their disciples. A decision that proved to undermine the Dutch rule, since it was here that Sukarno studied civil engineering and became heavily involved with radical Bandung Study Club that later transformed into the Indonesian Nationalist Party (PNI). It was in this political party that nationalist feelings were cultivated amongst the younger generation and the urge for independence launched Sukarno as the first president of the nation.

This tradition of political involvement and outspokenness remains a trademark of ITB students today. Although you wouldn't say that if you stroll around the University grounds that have a park like atmosphere, with the Indo-European architecture now the playground for students enjoying their lunch break.

The art gallery consisting with work of the art students is worth visiting and allows a peak into the views and thoughts of the restless critical minded. Another useful addition of the university are its extensive sport facilities that consist of a running court, tennis and soccer fields and a large outdoor swimming pool. It is open for public and for a mere 3000 Rp. Permits you to take a fresh plunge into the unheated pool, in a far less crowded environment than most public pools.

To get to ITB get a Dago angkot from the train station or terminal Kelapa and get off before simpang Dago with on the right hand side rumah sakit Borroneus and walk down Jalan Ganeca on the left side, until you come across the sporting facilities and the pool.
