Royal Merdeka Hotel
by: Emma Kwee

This hotel is the newest addition to the Bandung Royal group comprised of three 2 star hotels in the city center. The Royal Merdeka was opened in 1995. It is situated strategically in the heart of the Bandung Business district directly opposite of the Bandung City Hall (Balai Kota). It advertises as conveniently located for business travelers as well as ‘those with a passion for shopping' being a stone's throw away from the malls and shopping centers of central Bandung .

Of the Royal group, hotel Royal Merdeka certainly looks the most modern, and both public spaces as rooms have modern facilities and fresh decoration. The lounge is a spacious white marbled hall, with seating arrangements, free hotspot and a small internet café for those who don't have a laptop. There's also an IDD telephone suitable for local and international calls and a small drugstore to cater to your daily needs.

A small café called the Pacific Bar offers cozy seating and sips of exotic cocktails as well as tea. At the back the Deli Coffee-Shop serves a buffet style breakfast every morning from 06.00 to 11.00 am , inclusive in the room rate. The breakfast features American and Indonesian favorites and the a la carte menu has a selection of Indonesian, Western and Chinese style dishes at reasonable prices.

The 50 rooms are divided into 5 categories: economy, standard, deluxe, junior suite and suites. The economy rooms are the smallest, but still decent sized, have a smaller television and no mini bar. They do however have a private bathroom with bath tub and a/c and hot water. The deluxe rooms are more spacious and feature a king size bed. At the top of the range come the suites, which have a separate living room and are really quite spacious. All the rooms are clean and attractively furnished. On the door a sign reads that it is prohibited to bring Durian (the smelly, spiky, indigenous fruit) to keep the rooms as fresh as they are.

The Royal Meeting room has the facility to cater to small meetings for up to 50 attendants, and meeting packages are available. Since the hotel mostly caters to business travelers, these are all the facilities and services provided. For a two star hotel one can't expect more, and it must be said that this is one of the better options in this price range. Within the Royal group, the Royal Merdeka certainly stands out, being newer, fresher and overall more accommodating.
