The Square restaurant is home to the lucky guests of the Novotel Bandung. This establishment, located on the first floor of before mentioned hotel, eagerly blends in with the fresh and modern outlook of the hotel, with a brand new menu that features fusion from all over the world.
- The Vibe
A first inkling of modernity dawns upon us when confronted with a vibrantly green, fake grass wall. Luckily the rest of the décor is less colourful, with wooden furniture, a small bar and views of the pool. The Square often features live cooking shows and special events such as Valentine dinner, making it a happening place, instead of a dull hotel restaurant. The Friday Jazz Corner is a weekly socializing and intermingling locale for Bandung residents and guests alike.
- The Food
The menu is surprisingly original, the chefs not afraid to display their talents and creativity. There are Western specialties such as ‘ pan-fried rolled beef tenderloin in bacon and Dijon mustard ' and Indonesian favourites such as Oxtail Balado & Timbel Rice . As a starter the Chef delights us with a blackened tuna rollade with mango salsa , a creation not yet on the menu. But by heavens it should be! The tuna is so tender that I mistook it for roast beef, and the black pepper crust leaves a spicy kick on the tongue that can only be softened by the cherry tomato mango salsa.
Another forte of the chefs are the grilled fish dishes. We don't hesitate and opt for the Grilled Muara Karang Seafood platter (Rp. 110,000) and the Grilled Salmon with Red wine sauce (Rp. 135,000). Again, a feast for eyes and taste buds. The grilled Muara Karang consists of a trio of fresh shrimp, squid and baronang fish. Each having their own texture, the huge portion disappears from the plate in no time. The salmon being tender and succulent, is a good option for people who don't want to spend time looking for fishbones. Tasty, exclusive and original are words that come to mind, describing The Square's creations.
- The Staff
The Chefs are internationally trained and it shows. They dare to colour outside of the lines of most hotel menus and have come up with original fusion dishes, using good and fresh ingredients. The waiting staff is friendly and not too timid to make suggestions, which is always a good thing, for it shows that they know what they are talking about, and are actively involved in the restaurant.
SD's personal take on The Square @ Novotel Bandung The Square proves to be above expectation with a daring menu with a wide choice of handcrafted dishes. All prepared with fresh ingredients of good quality, this is not your usual hotel restaurant fare. Minor point of critique is that the setting of The Square will not elude you from the fact that you are dining in a hotel, the fake grass wall is a nice try, but it only distracts for a while.
