Mount Bromo Volcano
by: Editorial Team

East Java’s temperature is relatively higher than other parts of Java and the rain season is shorter. Volcanoes provide cool slopes on which various smallholding fields are located.
Two famed volcanoes reside in East Java, the Bromo Volcano and the Semeru Volcano, located very near to each other that they complement each other’s beauty. The area surrounding the two volcanoes is rich in cultural heritages from the Hindu era such as ancient temples and bathing places, still in very good conditions.

  • Bromo Volcano
The most famous of East Java’s volcanoes is the Bromo volcano in the Tengger caldera near Surabaya. The volcano is one of the several small cones in the 10-km diameter caldera and from the volcano you can view a magnificent sunset, and a spectacular view of the Semeru volcano (3676 m).

  • Semeru Volcano
The Semeru volcano itself is a very active, sometimes erupting and always dangerous, especially on its summit regions. Another active volcano is the Kelut Volcano (1731 m) near Serang.

  • Ijen Caldera
East Java is also the home of the largest caldera in the island, the Ijen Caldera which is 16 Km in its width, and is the center of intensive sulphur mining.
