Mojacar - a Simple Guide

By: Alicia Taylor

How many other regions can offer mountains, desert, beaches and areas of natural beauty all rolled up with the sunny Spanish climate! A visit to the Cabo de Gata National Park or the Tabernas Desert is a must for any nature lover.

There is a lot to do in The Costa Almeria including climbing, walking, hiking, horse riding, water sports and golfing. This is just one reason why so many UK residents are choosing this area when looking for Spanish property for sale.

Mojacar

Mojacar sits on a craggy hillside looking down on the Mediterranean. The town is actually split into two parts - the town and the beach. The town dates back over 4000 years and, in its time, it has been home to Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans and Moors so it really is rich in culture and history. A simple walk around the town is fascinating enough but also be sure to take a look at:

  • La Fuente Mora -- the Moorish fountain has been a water source since the days of the Romans and is still used by locals today. The walls contain a history of the town.

  • Puerta del la Almedina -- the Old City Gate used to be the entrance to the town in the days of the Moors.

  • La Plaza Nueva -- the New Plaza gives ones of best views in the town showing the contrast between the Mediterranean and the inland views.

  • La Iglesia de Santa Maria - the Church of Santa Maria was originally a 14th century fortress before becoming a church.

  • Casa del Torreon -- the Old Customs House used to be the place where visitors to the town were taxed to enter.

Buying a home in Mojacar

Until the 1960s Mojacar was suffering from depopulation problems which saw the population of the town plummet. The local government started to offer free land to anyone who would build on it and this led to a new surge in residents -- both locals and foreign nationals. The boom in Costa Almeria property for sale is nowhere more evident than in this town -- half of whose residents are now estimated to be foreign nationals.

The building boom has led to a lot of new properties being built and -- as the townÃ???s reputation spread -- it has become a popular place for foreign investment both for relocation purposes and for holiday home purchases. There are, as a consequence, many Mojacar apartments for sale at any given time. Despite this fact the town remains unspoilt and is likely to remain that way given the commitment of local residents.

Conclusion

Foreign nationals looking for property in Spain often end up looking at Mojacar apartments for sale -- they are drawn to the townÃ???s history, to the well-established and fully integrated expat community and to the advantages of living in the Costa Almeria.
