Deep Ellum Neighborhood

By: Wayne M

Deep Ellum Neighborhood is compact and exciting, filled with artists, musicians and craftsmen all looking to become the next big thing.
Living in Deep Ellum can range from expansive lofts that cost four figures a month, to much smaller and more economical apartments and homes. Most people think that since you're living in downtown Dallas that rent would universally be high, but there are still apartment bargains out there ready to be discovered.

If you've never been to Dallas, the Deep Ellum neighborhood is located just to the east of the US 75 freeway that runs elevated through a portion of downtown Dallas and to the north of Exposition Park and to the south of the neighborhood known as Bryce Place.
The roots of Deep Ellum are traced back to manufacturing and heavy industry. It was originally the site of a major cotton processing plant and later a supplemental assembly factory for Henry Ford's Model T. It ended up being one of the largest Ford factories outside of Detroit for many years. The neighborhood has also had a proud black tradition as it was one of the first predominantly black areas in Dallas and one of the first areas black entrepreneurs built and ran businesses in Dallas.
Maybe the single best distinguishing feature of the Deep Ellum neighborhood is the fact that it has been the city center for jazz, blues and rock and roll for over 100 years. For almost as long as Dallas has been a city, those looking to make their way with art, music or performance have been drawn to the Deep Ellum neighborhood, and it is a proud tradition that continues today and the one thing that defines Deep Ellum more than any other.

Today, Deep Ellum is an interesting mix of high priced apartments and affordable hidden gems that still attract artists and musicians looking to make it big. Recent newspaper articles have bemoaned how high priced some parts of the traditionally blue collared area has become, but the spirit of Deep Ellum is still there and still ready to make beautiful music with those looking to make it big.

The main entertainment district today in Deep Ellum is located on Main and Elm streets, just like it has been for generations. The names of the clubs might have changed, but the spirit remains the same. The schoolchildren of Deep Ellum attend the Dallas Independent School District and attend one of two high schools in the area and one of two elementary and middle schools that serve the area, as well.
Some residents of Deep Ellum are genuinely concerned about the future existence of the area thanks to rising real estate prices, but as long as there are men and women singing the blues and looking to strike it rich, the soul of Deep Ellum will remain intact.
