The buzz of the town is about Tata Nano, the hottest segment in the car market. The ultra-low cost car has taken away all the attraction not only domestically but also globally. It is right on top of the automotive mind-space. It has not only created a tough competition in the bike segment but also in the car segment. The value of the used car. ?went down drastically after the Nano was unveiled.
Nano has already attracted a long queue of customers, especially the taxi operators and BPO cab drivers across the country. Many taxi drivers have postponed their plans to buy new cars and prefer to wait for the one lakh car that will hit the market next this Diwali. The car was showcased at the 2008 Auto Expo, New Delhi.
It is going to be a 600 cc engine and a seating capacity for four persons. BPO cab vendors are also eagerly awaiting the small car. Tata's Indica and Sumo have for long been the preferred vehicles on account of high fuel efficiency, easy maintenance, and easy affordability.
At present Tata Indica is the single largest and the popular used taxi across commercial transport in India. The diesel and CNG versions remain the most fuel efficient hatchback in its segment.
Nano is going to be the tough competition for auto rickshaw manufacturers. Currently, an auto rickshaw costs Rs 1.4 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), an Indica car costs Rs 3.5 Lakh and an ambassador car costs Rs 4.5 Lakh onwards. Auto rickshaw owners are also eagerly waiting for Nano's release.
