The price of gas is constantly on the rise and all of us are looking for ways to combat the ever increasing cost to our pocket books. Some of us are looking to buy smaller more fuel efficient vehicles like hybrids or the small econobox cars. However some of us really love the vehicles we drive and don't want to give them up especially for a hybrid or econobox no matter how good on gas they are.
Yeah that's right some of us so called macho types pretend we like filling up those duel tanks and don't we know it, we certainly haven't responded to the high price by selling any of our gas guzzling vehicles. Well here are some facts about hybrids, econoboxes and regular vehicles that might make you feel better about not wanting to give up your favorite vehicle. You may also find they help you to improve your mpgs without trading in your vehicle for something you hate just to get better mileage.
Thinking of buying a hybrid? Well here are some points to ponder before you buy one.
Hybrids get there best fuel economy in stop and go traffic because the engine shuts off when the car is stopped and the car runs on the battery. However this is not the case on the highway. Also do not modify your hybrid by putting special tires or other modifications, because it can drastically change your fuel mileage and depending on what you do to it may even void your warranty.
If your going to buy an econobox there's not much I can tell you they tend to get very good mileage. The problem with these vehicles is safety and driving pleasure. In my experience these vehicles offer little of either.
Should you go with an automatic transmission or manual? Nowadays, automatics are increasingly better at shifting than the average person, at the most opportune time. In some models automatics are actually getting better mileage than the manual version of the same car. Manual transmissions however are still lighter in weight and commonly have more gear choices. For now I'd still go with manual transmissions for better mileage and just plain fun.
The more torque your engine has the easier it is to get up to speed without effort, because when the engine doesn't have to work as hard you save gas, obviously! That's why a diesel gets better gas mileage than a gas engine, as much as 30 percent better.
