A spark plug is an electrical device found in the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine like that of the Mercedes Benz. It supplies the electrical energy needed to ignite the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, turning the mixture into working energy. The resulting energy, measured in horsepower, is then supplied from the engine to run the Mercedes Benz.
In order that the burn materials in the cylinder heads are ignited, the spark plug initially harnesses low-voltage electricity from a car battery. This low-voltage current is amplified into high-voltage electricity by the coils in the ignition system. Once converted, the high-voltage current passes through the spark plug wires and into the cylinder head.
Compared to typical wires, spark plug wires in the Mercedes Benz ignition system are built to have a lot of resistance: the higher the resistance, the less is the fluctuation in the electric current transmission. When the ignition system converts low-voltage electricity into high-voltage current, radio static is produced and can affect the flow of current on the spark plug wires. Fluctuations in the current delivery may result in insufficient spark and burn material waste.
Spark plug wires resistance often dictates the power of a spark plug to ignite the burn materials. Standard spark plug wires generally have a resistance of about 10,000 to 15,000 ohms per foot of length. Mercedes Benz spark plug wires resistance higher than the given range restricts the electricity flow, which results to engine underperformance.
Since high-voltage electricity is chronically pumped into the spark plug wires, the risk of power surges depends on the wire designs fitted on the Mercedes Benz. The spark plug wires are connected to the spark plugs and distributor or ignition coils. To isolate the electric current flow on the wires from other engine operations, spark plug wires are insulated internally. The spark plug wires are coated in a silicone billet to protect the wires from deterioration caused by ignition system oil and gunk and the heat byproduct of combustion.
Added and important features in spark plug wires are the boots and connectors that affix the wires in the ignition system. In most cases the Mercedes Benz ignition system uses spark plug wires with silicone boots and bolt-on connectors. Since spark plug wires handle high-voltage currents, they are fitted snugly in the ignition system to help achieve a precision spark delivery.
However, the longer the go in service, the more brittle their insulation gets. Internally, the core of the wires is at risk of cracking up from the high-voltage electricity that it handles. The resulting breakdown in the spark plug wires means the electricity will be redirected elsewhere, causing engine misfiring, fouled spark plugs, and rough running. Unfortunately, spark plug wire problems can be hard to detect since wire insulation and core problems are hidden below the wire surface.
