1) No Gold medals from 1896 to 1904
During the inaugural Olympics in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The first Olympic medals in 1896 were designed by French sculptor Jules-Clément Chaplain and depicted Zeus holding Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, on the obverse and the Acropolis on the reverse.
- In 1896 to 1904, the winners were given a silver medal and an olive branch. Runners-up received a laurel branch and a copper or bronze medal.
- In 1904, the Olypic committee started the tradition of awarding gold, silver and bronze medals at Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
- In 1900 Olympic Games, most winners received cups or trophies instead of medals. This is the year Paris started the tradition of the host city minting the medals. For the next few Olympiads the host city chose the medal design.
- In 1912 Stockholm Olympics, the organisers gave out solid gold medal and that was the last time solid gold was given out.

Modern Olympic gold medals are made of sterling silver that has been plated with real solid gold. The gold medal is actually made of 494 grams of silver and 6 grams of gold. The melted gold and silver of a gold medal is worth about $587 in current market prices.

Ray Ewry won eight Olympic gold medals in 1900, 1904 and 1908, His unprecedented feats; the standing high jump, the standing long jump and the standing triple are now non-existent events.
He was born in Lafayette in 1873. Orphaned at the age of 5. A doctor told Ewry he would never walk again. Ray had polio and was bound to a wheelchair. There was no cure. He was 7 years old. The rest is history. (We think he deserves to be the greatest Olympian)
