Restricting the Use of Air Conditioners

By: rsbombard
Through ages man has been trying to device new tools and develop superior technology to do away with the problems they encounter. Once a new gadget is invented it is believed hat it would bring an end to the hassle it is supposed to deal with. What we end up having is a device which may be helpful in dealing with the particular problem, but it in its turn brings new problems.

Take for example the case of an air conditioner. The reason it was invented was pretty acceptable. In those hot and sapping summer days, anyone would enjoy the comfort of an air conditioner. Problem is it has effects which are hardly noticeable instantly. But it actually can have severe long-term repercussions. Being in an environment where the temperature is being constantly regulated can actually make us grow fat. Though the evidence is not conclusive and there needs to be more research in this domain, but what we have in terms of proof is also something that should make us sit up and take notice.

It has been argued that our body under normal circumstances would try to adjust its own temperature with respect to the temperature outside. Such adjustment on its own part requires an effort from its side. Any effort means burning of calories and hence lowering of fat content inside the body. With constant regulated temperatures our body need not work extra. There is no need for the body to adjust the temperature. Result is, fat inside the body stays undisturbed and we grow fat. The fatter we are the more uncomfortable we will feel during summers and the more uncomfortable we are the more we will use the air conditioner. So it is almost like a vicious circle where we go on in a loop.

Another sever effect of the air conditioner is the effect it has on the atmosphere. Scientists claim that much of today's global warming can be attributed to the increasing use of air conditioners all over the world particularly in the developed countries where people have more access to the device. It should be understood that to run an air conditioner we must provide energy. This comes from burning natural resources like oil and coal which are directly responsible for the greenhouse effect. In a way by trying to cool our rooms, we are actually warming up the entire world.

Both these reasons are serious enough for us to restrict the use of air conditioners.
