Acid Reflux Surgery Comes to the Rescue

By: Wangeci Kinyanjui

They say that you are never wrong when choosing surgery as a possible cure for acid reflux problems. Various types of surgeries can be performed in order to stop this condition from ever occurring to you again. The disease is said to take place mainly because of a valve that covers the top of the esophagus not being able to perform its duties as required. This valve may cause food content from the stomach which includes gastric acid to sometimes pass through it and reach the throat. When this acid also reaches the throat, it makes you suffer from a burning sensation and you are said to be suffering from acid reflux. Listed below are the two types of surgeries that are used in today's world to help prevent this predicament from taking place.

Laparoscopy is a type of acid reflux surgery performed when the disease is caused by the malfunctioning of the valve covering the top of the esophagus. A small slit is made through the throat and a camera is inserted via a tube. Through this camera, the surgeon is able to see inside the throat and in turn be able to tighten the valve. This way, the cover/valve can now close properly when needed and it won't be subjected to pass unwanted material from the stomach. This stops the contents from ever moving upwards and get into the throat. Under normal circumstances, the procedure is said to take 30 minutes to perform and then you may be discharged after a day or so. In case of any problem, the surgery may be done again. Due to the reason that this type of surgery is accompanied by a lot of pain, many people do not opt for it.

Plicator surgery is another new type of acid reflux surgery also used to correct the defective valve which covers the top of the esophagus. It is said to be a less severe procedure to undergo in terms of pain compared to laparoscopy. Here, a gadget known as the plicator is run down the throat via a tube. This gadget is then used to tighten the valve to prevent it from ever letting stomach contents pass through it and get into the throat. This way, acid which is usually carried together with the stomach contents is also stopped from reaching the throat and so back ward flow of acid tends to be avoided. After the surgery is over, you may be released from hospital after a day depending on how you are progressing. However, unlike the laparoscopy, the plicator surgery may require to be repeated after some few years in order to re tighten the valve. This reason usually makes people choose this option only when it is absolutely necessary to use it for treatment.

If all the methods used to cure acid reflux fail, the above surgical approaches may be used to end once and for all this problem. The only thing that may be required of you, is to properly and adequately consult a doctor before deciding to go through with these acid reflux surgeries.I hope you get to have what you are looking for as you settle on surgery as your last option.
