Chocolate and Cancer

Cocoa has been shown to have several
cardioprotective mechanisms which are
like those found in several other
flavonoid rich foods and beverages
including red wine and green tea. It has
also been shown that these
flavonoid-rich foods have an
anti-carcinogenic action in vitro and in
animal models, this has been supported
by some, but not all epidemiological
data.

Non-apoptotic death has been seen in
both colon and breast cancer cell lines
that have been introduced to cocoa
polyphenols during in vitro studies, this
has been preliminary evidence. The
exact anti-cancer mechanisms are not
currently understood at this time, even
though enzymes that were involved in
polyamine biosynthesis have been
affected.
Studies on animals have
shown that cacao liquor extract may
assist in defending against cancer of
the liver and pancreas, but no evidence
of this has been seen in human studies.

Population studies have shown an
increased risk of breast cancer,
colorectal cancer and gastric cancer in
those who have a high intake of sweets
such as chocolate. A controlled case
study in Africa showed an increased
risk of bladder cancer among those who
ate a lot of cocoa products, but a study
in Italy found no correlation. The
majority of these studies did not look
specifically at dark chocolate and any
relationship to humans should be more
closely looked at in future studies.

The consumption of dark chocolate,
even though it is clear that it does not
raise serum cholesterol, blood pressure
or induce LDL oxidation, should be
considered carefully because it is not
sure if it affects any of these things in a
favorable manor.
Studies showing significant improvement
have used much greater amounts of
chocolate than those who did not show
favorable results. This indicates that
to get any significant effects from dark chocolate
you would need to eat at least 100
grams each day this would add 530
calories to your diet daily. Unless the
subject could cut calories in some other
way, this kind of increase would lead to
significant weight gain, overweight and
obesity.
