Everybody can tell you how important it is to eat enough fruits and vegetables and practice sports – if you want to have a long and healthy life. What do you do in this respect? Does your diet contain all the right vitamins and minerals that we need in our body? If your answer is affirmative, we owe you congratulations. You must be one of the few persons who are cautious with what they eat, go to the nutritionist and eat many vegetables. Unfortunately, most of us eat too many fats, although we know they are bad for our health. Despite the myriad of books that tell us what we should eat, the fast food is still among the top preferences. Just look at McDonald’s – have they gone bankrupt? On the contrary, they are doing very well. This proves that most of us still go for a hamburger during the lunch break. Nevertheless, even if you do eat fruits and vegetables, you may lack some important substance - such as Omega-3 fats, which are essential for the right development of our body. These fats are not particular to most of the fruits and vegetables we eat. This is a pity, because they have many beneficial uses: they lower the cholesterol, help prevent gallstones, heart diseases and cancer and protect bones. What do you do so as not to be lack this important substance? You simply include walnuts in your daily diet. Indeed, the walnut is one of the few aliments that contain Omega-3 fatty acids, so a few walnuts at breakfast, lunch or dinner are enough to provide you with your necessary daily Omega-3 dose. You would be very surprised to find out all the wonders the common walnut can do for your health. To begin with, it can help reduce the level of cholesterol and triglycerides after a high fat meal, therefore decreasing cardiovascular risk. Of course, this does not mean that a few walnuts can compensate an unhealthy diet. You have to maintain an equilibrated diet, without fast food and sweets (as sad as this may sound). Does your kid find it difficult to concentrate at school? Does he or she fight with other children? Do teachers complain that he or she is too agitated? You must know that sometimes learning disorders, hyperactivity and behavioral problems come from a shortage of Omega-3 fatty acids. Add a few walnuts to his or her morning cereals and see how he or she is doing afterwards. Do you have problems getting a good night sleep? Try to eat a salad sprinkled with walnut at dinner. The scientific proof is that the walnut contains melatonin, a hormone that induces and regulates sleep. In addition, the Omega-3 found in walnuts protects bone health. Nevertheless, the main benefit of the walnut remains protection against cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, you do not have to worry – eating walnut will not make you fat. According to the studies, walnuts actually decrease the risk of gaining weight. Therefore, if you are on a diet, a few nuts can make a delicious and healthy snack. We sometimes forget to take care of our most precious asset: our health. Of course, nobody is perfect, and if you eat a piece of cake at a friend’s birthday from time to time it is not a tragedy. Nevertheless, if you care about your strength and good physical condition, you should give up your daily hamburger an replace it with a healthier snack. A salad – you can find one at McDonald’s as well - would be better. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish and olive oil should be part of your diet. If your children eat nothing but chips and burgers, try to encourage them to eat fruits and cereals. It is difficult to fight temptations and eat the right food, but it is the only way to avoid diseases.
