Learn about Thanksgiving Dinner Recipes

Thanksgiving is a time of food. It's a festivity of the Pilgrim's early successes in America, victory through hard work to reclaim the land in what was for them a new world. The menu is usually the same. Pumpkin pie ends a turkey dinner that includes all the extras. Families gather not only to celebrate the historic event, but just to catch up with everyone's lives. Thanksgiving dinner recipes can be quite different, as there are many ways to cook a turkey.

How about this recipe for a delightful appetizer? Move the pumpkin from the pie to the soup. Heat a tablespoon each of oil and butter over medium heat. Add leaks to saute, only the white portion, until soft. Now throw in some pumpkin puree along with cloves, cinnamon, ground ginger and some salt. Stir that until well mixed, then pour in 32 ounces of vegetable broth. Stir in one quarter cup of brown sugar. Bring it to a low boil then let it simmer for 1 minutes. Cream or half and half are optional, along with a pinch of cinnamon on top of each bowl. Mmmm boy that's delicious.

Fried turkey is also good. You may think it's greasy but it isn't. The oil is so hot it doesn't flow into the meat. For this task a big oil pot and propane burner are used. Turkey fryers can be found in stores like Walmart. You'll need two thermometers, one for the meat and one for the oil. Make sure to fry outside in a clear area. The oil must be between 325F and 35F. Cook it for 3 minutes per pound, until the breast is 17F. Frying a turkey doesn't involve cooking the stuffing inside the bird, but it does include spices directly injected into it.

For some other soup ideas try curried pumpkin apple soup, butternut squash soup, or pumpkin and sausage soup. Other appetizer possibilities also exist. Try something different like cheese wrapped asparagus. Use two cheeses, one spread and one sliced. A blue cheese spread over slices of swiss can be good. Spread the soft cheese on the slices, wrap it around a few asparagus spears, then cook in a 23 degree C oven for about 15 minutes, or until the asparagus is soft.

The asparagus prepared this way loses its health appeal. Thanksgiving is a time for a little fun. So live it up.
