If you have met someone online or you are being set up through a blind date you need to think about the fact that you do not know much, if anything, about the person. For this reason, you need to take some precautions to make sure that you not only have a good time but that you also stay safe on your date. When you do not know someone well it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Tips for Keeping Safe
The first thing you will want to do is be sure that you know exactly where and when you will be meeting. This is especially important if you are not familiar with the place that you are meeting. You don't simply want to stand around and wait for someone who may not be coming at the wrong time. Not only would it not be fun to stand around, you may run into the wrong type of people as you just stand around in an unfamiliar location.
Next, make sure that the place where you are meeting is very public. Until you get to know someone well you should always meet them in a public setting. This way, if something happens you can simply get up and walk away or you can look to others for help. Chances are you could meet most of the people that you are dating in a private setting, but it is just better to err on the side of caution.
Keep your date simple. For instance, do not plan to meet at one place and then go to another and another. If you do decide that you are going to go to a secondary location, make sure that it is as public as the first place and drive yourself there and make sure that your date drives themselves. This way, you are always sure that you are able to get away if things go south.
Make sure a friend or family member knows where you are going and who you are with. Should you not turn up when you are supposed to the people in your life will have a point of reference. If your plans change, excuse yourself and call your friend or family member and let them know. It is always good when someone can keep tabs on you when you are out and about with someone that you don't know.
Chances are that you will have a great first date and that you will be able to move onto meeting someone in a private setting. When it comes to meeting new people you just never know who they are or even what their intentions are, so that it why it is always important to keep your guard up a bit and take some safety precautions.
Writing An Online Profile
An eloquent, five-paragraph essay isn't necessary, but having a logical and organized profile is necessary. You only have a few seconds to impress someone online so follow the basic rule of keeping it clean. Avoid slang and swear words (at least use them sparingly), avoid mentioning too many details, and stick to the point. Don't offend or bore the reader.
The most important tip, though, is to be creative. This is more important than being short, clean, and to the point in your profile because you want to make yourself stand out from the rest.
Don't describe yourself in a clich or generic way. Read the profiles of ten women and men in your area with characteristics similar to yours. Research your written profile by searching out your competitors. In reading these profiles list the things those people mention and notice the pattern, for example, does almost everyone mention travel, interesting books or movies, and Chinese food? Be sure not to include those items in your own profile. Be different.
Now do the reverse. Find ten men or women who you would like to get to know. Read all ten profiles and list the items mentioned. If you find that you share common interests that are somewhat unique, then definitely mention those things in your profile.
The point is that you want to make a good impression so that your potential connections read all of your profile, and are motivated to contact you. You can woo this person later in your e-mails, but for right now just get them interested.
