It's already given how Grey's Anatomy as a show likes toying around with couples. We've seen it split them up then put them back together, force a conflict between their personal and professional loves, and basically just mess up the love lives of those involved. If we remember it correctly, it was Cristina who first raised an eyebrow over the rather sudden and apparent closeness between Erica Hahn and Callie Torres. In the episode "Where The Wild Things Are," the returning Addie Montgomery, in jest or otherwise, asks Callie if they are dating. Callie just laughed it off, but later on, when it was revealed that she and Erica are hanging out in the apartment Cristina left for two weeks for the surgery contest among the residents, it was an idea which isn't very hard to dismiss.
That being said, the idea of a lesbian couple on Grey's Anatomy wasn't very hard to ignore and fans immediately showed good feedback on the idea. The season 4 finale of the ABC medical drama packed the most punch and sealed the deal: when the two shared a very passionate kiss. Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes confirmed that the couple will be sharing many steamy scenes together in the upcoming season, and that "it will be funny, sweet, honest, and a little bit dirty," in true Grey's fashion.
The actress who plays Erica Hahn, Brooke Smith said she didn't think her character was a lesbian from the very beginning, she conceded that "it was too obvious that a strong, powerful woman would be a lesbian" and while Dr. Hahn "decided she wasn't going to have a relationship at work ? clearly she came to the wrong hospital." Definitely, this storyline is another one that will be hugely followed come season 5.
