Car Rentals Running on Empty

By: Karl Bantleman

The number of accidents on British roads is one of the main reasons why an ever increasing amount of people are looking to car rental companies to supply them with a method of transport. These companies are now finding it hard to cope with the level of demand that now exists within the common market place. The rental companies can not afford to expand their fleet, so managing and planning is important but that is not as easy as it sounds.

Recently, most car rental companies are seeing an empty fleet at the end of the day as people flock to them for help. In some cases, companies have to turn people away due to a lack of cars which is having a detrimental effect on the image of these well-known companies.

In the past, car hire was not as popular but there are various factors that have resulted in an unexpected rise in popularity. First there was the introduction of cheap holidays which meant a larger percentage of the country chose to travel abroad during the summer; this meant more people required a car. Now, with the British public being involved in more accidents than ever before, people are constantly turning to car hire companies as a stopgap.

The number of car rentals has increased considerably and the important question is; can the companies cope with the demand. One problem is that, if the reason for the car hire is because the person has been involved in an accident and is waiting for his/her car to be repaired, the person is unlikely to be able to give the rental company a definite return date. This is affecting the companies because they are not able to plan their business sufficiently and when struggling to meet demand, detailed planning is essential.
