The Rising Wave of Mobile Social Communities

By: Sarah Shaukat

In the past couple of years, mobile social communities have generated a great buzz .These communities are not only about making new friends but have developed a whole new way of sharing information through mobile phones. They allow mobile phone users to create their own profiles, make friends, participate in chat rooms, create chat rooms, hold private conversations, share photos and videos, share blogs all with their cell phones.

We have heard of some popular online social communities such as Facebook and MySpace, but now the paradigm is shifting towards connecting people through their mobile phones. According to Wireless Federation Research on"Mobile Social Communities" there are nearly 45 million members using it worldwide, a number that is expected to reach 175 million in 2012.. Some emerging entrants in this category have been WAJDA, Mosh, Dodgeball.com, Zingku, Vipera and many more.

There are also some sites that are merging location-based services with social networks to help people connect with the people and places around them. Other than receiving e-mails and instant messages on your cell, you can now access the "status updates" and buddy profiles that are available on the social networks. Some start-ups are using location-based technologies to let cellular subscribers keep track of their friends near by. It makes it so easy that whenever you want to go out for movie, you can just throw in a message to ask if anybody else is also interested in it.

Advertising can also be targeted to specific niches with greater accuracy through mobile social communities. Many mobile communities also offer downloadable merchandise for sale such as ringtones or images, turning the mobile networking into a profitable venture. Another advantage that can be gained from mobile social networking sites is to provide an easy access for people who deserve donations. Apart from this companies can sponsor special interest communities that relate directly to their brands or services.

The best thing about these mobile social networking communities is that they keep on growing themselves. If you join one community and you like it, you will always refer it to your friends. By word of mouth, users keep spreading the word till indefinite time. To conclude, if mobile social networking communities deliver exactly what mobile users are looking for, they will become popular within no time.
