3 Skypephones - the Communication Modes Take a Different Turn

By: Raina Kelsey

The Three Skypephone 3G mobile phone from Amoi is a big brand enjoying wide reputation in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, Sweden and UK. Hong Kong and Macau are the countries that are going to get joined soon. Three, a big name in the field of mobile phones, is offering 4000 free Skype outbound voice minutes that expire after 30 days, unless the user purchases another top-up or is on a pay monthly plan. Inbound calls are not included in this quota. As per the website of My3, the phone model is identified as the 'Amoi 8512', while the packaging the phone comes in, calls it the 'WP-S1'. Anyway, the handset is currently being marketed under the name 3 Skypephone and is currently available in 3's own stores.

Earlier, the Windows Live Messenger software was supported on the handset in select countries only. But later by November 2007, it was released as a Java application in the UK, and now is available through the Launcher softkey on the phone. Usage of the Messenger is free on 3's UK and Ireland networks. The Three Skypephone supports UMTS/W-CDMA 2100MHz, GSM and GPRS (900/1800 MHz).

The Skypephone generally uses the normal GSM voice network for handling Skype calls, and permits it to use Skype when the user is out of range of the 3G network and is roaming on one of 3's partner networks. It also has additional advantage of handling calls as it does not require data or Wi-Fi connections which have been shown to consume more energy.

The handset uses a USB connector for recharging and Phone-to-PC communication that allows it to recharge itself when plugged into the computer. The skypephone comes with a measurement of 100 x 44 x 13.6 mm and weighs 86 grams. The model comes with a battery that has a standby of 320 hours, talktime of 270 minutes and video talktime of 170 minutes.
