Beer Varieties |
With so many beers of various types to pick from, you will probably have to try several before you find your favorite. Since everyone has a favorite taste, you are in luck as there are so many beers to choose from. Probably the most popular type of be is the lager beer. Lager, which in German translates "to store", is usually served at a cool temperature rather than room temperature. Lager beer is made by aging the beer in large kegs and giving it the yeast an opportunity to settle. As a result, the beer is crisp, with a delicate flavor. Lager takes more time than most beers to make, because of the aging process. Another type of fermented beer is known as bock beer. This is because this type is named after the German beer brewing town of Einbeck. Bock beer is a bit heavier than a lager beer and is a dark color due to the malts that are used during the brewing process. Ales are beers with the characteristic fruitiness, a slight acidity and a pleasant, bitter aftertaste. Ales take less time to brew then lagers and are served at warmer temperatures as well, generally room temperature. Porter and stout beers also differ from lagers and ales. These beers can be sweet or dry, made from oats, roasted malt barley, or flavored with sugar. Porter and stouts have a characteristic deep coloring and depth in taste - the perfect accompaniment to meat or fish. A traditional fine meal in Europe consists of oysters and stout. When a beer is referred to as a "dry" type of beer what is being referred to is the amount of sugar that has been left in the beer after the fermentation process. A dry beer is fermented for a longer period of time than other beers so that most of the sugar has been transformed into alcohol. The end result of this lengthy fermentation process is a beer that is crisp and clear and has very little, if any, aftertaste. Micro breweries have become extremely popular in recent years. They reside in countries worldwide and are great places to visit. Not only do you get to sample their beer, but you also learn about the culture in the region you are visiting.
