How To Go About Writing Your E-Book
Debrah Kinsler
Think of writing an e-book like climbing a mountain. You stand at
the foot of the mountain wondering how you are ever going to
reach the top. There is only one way to accomplish this, one step
at a time.
Think of writing your e-book in the same manner. You must create
it step by step, and one day, you will take that last step and
find yourself standing on top of that mountain.
The first thing you have to do, as if you actually were a
mountain climber, is to get completely organized. Unlike a
mountain climber who would be organizing gear, you as the writer
will be organizing your thoughts.
Once you have completed each step, you will be read to actually
begin writing your e-book.
The first thing you need to determine is the title. Write down
several ideas and one of them will reach out and grab you. The
title will help yu to focus on writing your topics; they serve as
a guide to ask and answer questions your readers? questions.
Try to use a clever title since this helps to sell, however avoid
the too cute. A good example might be: ?Stop Being A Couch
Potato, Five Exercise Plans That Whip You Into Shape?.
Then you want to write out a thesis statement. The thesis
statements is simply a sentence or two exactly the problem or
question your book is addressing and how your book will solve
that problem.
The chapters of your e-book will be formed by your thesis
statement. Once your thesis statement is completed, you have a
foundation for the rest of your e-book. From these two little
sentences your e-book will grow chapter by chapter.
It is important to stay focused on your thesis statement, as each
chapter must support the thesis statement. If your thesis
statement cannot be support in the chapters, you need to change
the thesis statement or drop the chapter. For example: your
thesis statement might read: Do you have the couch potato blues?
Get yourself back in shape with these five exercises that will
build your energy.
Once you have your thesis, before you actually start to write,
make sure there is a good reason to writer your book. Ask your
some simple questions:
*Does your book present useful information and is that
information currently relevant?
*Will your book positively affect the lives of your readers?
*Is your book vibrant and will it keep the readers attention?
*Does your book answer questions that are meaningful and
significant to your readers?
Be being able to answer yes to all of these questions, you should
be pretty confident that you have an e-book that will be
interesting to others.
Another important step is to figure out who your target audience
is. It is this group that you will be writing to, and this group
will dictate many elements of your book, such as the style, tone,
diction, and even the length.
What is the age range of your readers, their general gender, what
are they most interest in, and even the socioeconomic group they
come from are all questions you need to ask yourself in order to
be able to target the correct market. The more you can list about
your target market, the easier it will be to define and determine
your target market.
What is the reason you are writing your e-book? Is it to promote
your business? Enhance your reputation? Bring quality traffic to
your website?
What are your goals in terms of publishing? Do you want to sell
it as a product on your website, or do you want to offer it as a
free gift for filling out a newsletter opt-in form or for
ordering a product? Are you interested in using each chapter as
an e-course or to attract affiliates?
These are important concepts to consider. The more you are
upfront before writing your e-book, the easier it will be to
complete.
Making your e-book user friendly is vital to the success of your
e-book. Keep your formatting in your chapters fairly consistent,
especially if your book is non-fiction.
The trick to a successful e-book is to keep it engaging for the
reader. Anecdotes, testimonials, short stories, photos, graphs,
tips and techniques will keep the reader turning your pages.
Write in a conversational tone rather than a formal tone such as
what you would find in a text book. Using sidebars are very
useful for quick reference and they help to break up the density
of the page.
Practice makes perfect and writing is no different. Good writing
takes practice. The art of writing is a life process; the more
you write and read, the better your writing will become. The
better your writing becomes the bigger your sales will be. It is
a good idea to read books, magazines and articles on writing and
when you see a tip that jumps out at you, write it down for
reference.
E-books that are read from a computer screen are sometimes
difficult to read. Keep this in mind when you are creating your
e-Book. Provide a lot of white space in between the paragraphs.
If your pages are too dense, your readers will not finish your
book because it is draining on the eyes.
Break up your paragraphs by using bulleted list and numbered
lists. This will provide information that is easy to absorb for
your reader and gives the reader a break from dissecting your
paragraphs.
The font can make the success of your e-book. Utilize a font that
is very easy on the eyes and stick with that font family. Using
dozens of different fonts to make your pages ?pretty? will only
tire your readers before they past the first page.
Use spacing of at least one and a half and a font that is large
enough to read on the screen, but small enough that the whole
page fits on a computer screen. This will take some testing, but
it is well worth the efforts. Another thing that is so important
and so overlooked is spelling and grammar errors. Don't mess up a
great book because you didn't take the time to utilize spell and
grammar check.
Now you have finished a book. Publish your e-book and wait for
the download requests to come pouring in.
