“Waterloo" was the song that paved the road to their success and it was also their first UK No.1. Their first album although it didn’t have a big impact on the album charts, it received positive reviews even from “serious" publications like the “Washington Post".
Then album after album they started dominating the charts creating songs that were catchy and deceptively simple. Today’s bands would die just for one song like theirs. In fact we do see a lot of bands that just come and go never to become immortals as Abba.
So knowing this why did they break up? Well a name pops into my head and that’s Yoko. We can see a resemblance with the Beatles case. Nobody in the Beatles, except for John of course, liked Yoko. And … that was it. What happened with Abba? The group was based on two couples: Björn/Agnetha and Benny/Frida. We can only imagine the tensions that arise from this kind of situation although it was also the magic of Abba.
Cracks started to appear when Björn and Agnetha divorced just two month after Benny and Frida got married. ABBA gradually started to disband. Another blow was 2 years after their marriage Benny and Frida also got divorced.
We could also notice a change in style and the lyrics became more personal. Songs like "The Winner Takes It All", "When All Is said and done" and "One of Us" gave us clear hints of their personal issues.
But why now after 32 years since “Waterloo" won the Eurovision Song Contest the group never made a comeback even when the band was offered 1 billion dollars to reunite?
Let’s see what happened. In mid 80’s the public lost interest in Abba but soon after the release of Abba Gold: Greatest Hits in 1992 we could see a revival. Björn stated that this revival is due to the fact they never reunited. “We have never made a comeback" Björn told a Swedish tabloid. “Almost everyone else has. I think there’s a message in that".
But isn’t that just a front to hide the real issues? At the “Mamma Mia" in London Benny, Björn and Frida were present. Agnetha was not. Rumor has it after the divorce Björn and Agnetha did not part as friends. The reason she won’t reunite Abba: she can’t stand him! Their divorce is stopping Abba from having a comeback.
Since the break up Björn and Agnetha’s interactions has been kept to a minimum. If it wasn’t for the children Agnetha would never had talked with him again.
Having witnessed the largest rejection in history, the fact that Agnetha is avoiding not only Björn but the other members as well, we are led to the hard truth: Abba will never get back together. As sad as it may sound probably it’s for the best. Maybe it’s better for us to keep in our minds those old images of them in their prime. Abba doesn’t need to reunite in order to revive them. They were always in our hearts. And will be for the years to come.
After Getting Back Together
By taking
the time to do a little "post mortem" research and by developing a plan to go
after those lost customers. Try following these five suggestions:
1.Develop a
"Most Wanted" list.
Before you can find out what caused customers to leave and how to win them back,
you have to figure out who they are. Big customers are easy to keep track of,
but countless smaller customers can slip away unnoticed if there's no system in
place to snag the escapees. Some companies have computer printouts that
highlight drastic drops in business from individual customers while others use
note cards or tracking forms.
2.Ask for
another chance.
Apologize for any inconvenience or misunderstanding. If the lost customer had a
legitimate reason for defecting, do what you can to correct the situation.
However, if the customer offers vague or unreasonable excuses for why he or she
left, think hard before diving back into what may be a difficult relationship.
You might be better off without that customer.
3. Come up with a peace offering.
When trying to win back an account or simply the good graces of a client, offer
to do something extra for them, such as free delivery for six months or 15
percent off their first order.
4. Practice routine maintenance.
Winning back a customer or an account is only half the battle. You have to
continue servicing that customer with excellence. Contact him or her every few
weeks to head off any concerns that might be brewing. Keep your records up to
date, and let your customers know you appreciate them and their business. A
personal note, a small memento, even a quick phone call can do wonders for
